A WORD FROM OUR FOUNDER
As we step into the final months of the year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible work our Dream Team has accomplished.
Over the past month, we’ve been focused on meeting our clients’ evolving needs with care, creativity, and commitment. It’s been a season of growth, collaboration, and meaningful progress.
With Christmas fast approaching, we’ve begun planning for the upcoming holiday period, including our shutdown dates to ensure everyone has time to rest and recharge.
This time of year, also invites us to pause and celebrate the wins, big and small. Whether it’s launching a new service, welcoming a new client, or simply refining the way we work, every step forward is a testament to the passion and purpose that drives us.
PREPARING FOR A CHRISTMAS/NEW YEARS SHUT DOWN
If your business is planning to close over the Christmas and New Year period, it’s important to start preparing early to ensure a smooth and compliant shutdown. Here are several key considerations:
1. Set and Communicate Shutdown Dates Early.
Keep clients informed to avoid confusion and ensure everyone is informed in advance.
2. Provide Written Notice to Employees.
Even if your employment contracts mention shutdowns, many modern awards require formal written notice.
3. Review Leave Balances
Make arrangements for unpaid or advanced leave if necessary.
4. Ensure Written Agreements for Leave in Advance
Have a written agreement in place.
5. Inform New Employees Early
Ideally during the onboarding process.
6. Public Holiday Entitlements
Employees are entitled to be paid for public holidays that fall during the shutdown if they would normally work on those days.
Taking the time to plan now will help ensure a smooth transition into the holiday period for both your team and your clients.
THE HIDDEN COST OF “PROFITABLE” PROJECTS
In the fast-paced world of project delivery, it’s easy to focus on profitability — especially when a job looks successful on paper. But behind the scenes, many businesses face a more pressing challenge: managing working capital effectively.
You’ve launched a major project. The team is engaged, materials are ordered, and progress is underway. Yet, some subcontractors haven’t submitted their invoices. One is on leave, others are delayed, and amidst the chaos, it’s easy to lose track.
Despite a healthy bank balance and projected profit, your working capital may be tied up in wages, materials, and operational costs. You might find yourself covering expenses out of pocket, with repayments delayed or forgotten. Over time, this can lead to increased director’s loans and even ATO payment plans. Even small, overlooked purchases can accumulate quickly. That’s why it’s essential to map out your working capital requirements for the entire duration of the project — including allowances for minor expenses.
Why This Matters
- Delayed invoicing can create cash flow gaps, forcing reliance on personal funds.
- Supplier follow-ups directed at your staff can damage morale and raise concerns about business stability.
-
Unmanaged cash shortfalls can delay project timelines, frustrate suppliers, and result in penalties.
Strategies to Strengthen Working Capital Management
Job Tracking & Costing – Monitor labour, materials, and subcontractor expenses in real-time to maintain visibility and accountability.
Invoice Management – Establish clear expectations with subcontractors and suppliers. Include invoicing timelines in contracts and follow up promptly.
Cash Flow Forecasting by Project – Understand when cash will be received and when it will be spent. Forecasting helps you plan ahead and avoid unexpected shortfalls.
Working capital is more than a financial metric – it’s a critical component of project success. Treat it with the same attention as your deliverables: map it, monitor it, and manage it proactively. Unmanaged cash shortfalls can delay project timelines, frustrate suppliers, and result in penalties.
CLIENT HIGHLIGHT: WARRIOR ELECTRICAL
Say hello to Warrior Electrical, our featured client this month.
Founded by brothers Sam and Tim, Warrior Electrical is built on a simple but powerful idea: helping people create their dream homes while keeping things safe, smart, and seamless. Whether it’s a full home reno or a quick fix, these guys bring energy, expertise, and a whole lot of heart to every job.
We asked the Warrior Boys to share a bit about their journey, their values, and what makes their business tick.
What inspired you to start your business?
We’re both qualified electricians, so starting a business together felt like a natural fit. We initially launched as Weekend Warrior Electrical to meet a gap in the market, offering weekend availability at no extra cost to customers. However, after working three months straight without a break, we made the decision to step away from weekend work to restore sustainability.
What makes your business unique in your industry or community?
I think we are really creative especially for electricians. We are always looking for new ways to do things, new ways to light it up and we try and be really invested into every project.
What’s your Favorite part of running your business?
The team we get to hang out with every day. We have such a good bunch of guys who are always willing to help.
What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner?

We have been doing this for 10years!
What would you like to achieve in the next 2 years?
We want to be the most trusted name for residential electrical and air-conditioning services across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie
How does Dream Admin Services help your business achieve its goals?
We have trusted Dream Admin Services to take care of all our incoming and outgoing calls for about 3 years now. They have made it easy for us and we have worked closely with them to stream line the process. They are now taking care of some of our marketing which has free’d up our time to concentrate on the air conditioning side of warrior. All the girls are so nice and genuine which fits in to our culture and how we treat our customers. Our customers genuinely think they are in the office working along side us.
We love working with Warrior Electrical and are so excited to continue supporting Sam, Tim and the team as they expand their services and offerings across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie!

Hiring Christmas Casuals: A guide for Australian Employers
As the festive season ramps up, many Australian businesses face a surge in customer demand. To meet this seasonal spike, hiring Christmas casual staff becomes a practical solution. But while casual employment offers flexibility, it also comes with specific legal obligations that employers must understand.
Understanding Casual Employment in Australia
Casual employees are a vital part of the workforce during peak periods like Christmas. Unlike permanent staff, casuals are not guaranteed regular hours and can choose whether to accept shifts. This flexibility benefits both employers and employees — especially when demand fluctuates.
However, casual workers do not receive the same entitlements as permanent employees. Instead, they are compensated with a casual loading typically; 25% above the base hourly rate; to offset the lack of paid leave and other benefits.
For detailed information on casual employment entitlements, FairWork provides comprehensive resources.
Key Entitlements for Christmas Casuals
While casual employees have fewer entitlements than permanent staff, they are still protected under Australian employment. Employers must also ensure compliance with relevant modern awards and industry pay guidelines, which set minimum standards for wages and working conditions.
Legal Considerations When Hiring Christmas Casuals
To avoid disputes and ensure smooth operations during the holiday rush, employers should focus on the following legal essentials:
1. Clear Employment Contracts
A written agreement should outline:
- Scope of work
- Pay rate (including casual loading)
- Shift expectations
- Termination conditions
2. Termination Clarity
While casuals typically don’t require notice, any agreed-upon notice period must be clearly stated in the contract.
3. Confidentiality & IP Protection
Even for short-term roles, include clauses that protect your business’s intellectual property and confidential information. This helps maintain professionalism and safeguards sensitive data.
Final Thoughts
Hiring Christmas casuals can be a smart way to manage seasonal demand but it’s crucial to get the legal details right. Need help drafting compliant casual contracts or updating your holiday staffing policies? Get in touch, we’re here to support your business every step of the way.
