Don’t Get Caught Out by Business Name Renewal Notices

Your business name is one of your most valuable assets, so when a renewal notice arrives, your first instinct is often to pay it straight away. But beware what looks official may not be.

Private organisations often send unsolicited renewal notices just before the legitimate one from the Australian Securities & Investment Commission (ASIC) is due. These notices can appear convincing, but responding to them means:

  • Paying more than necessary – ASIC has set fees and charges. Third-party services can cost hundreds.
  • Losing control of your business name – By paying them, you may give authority for these companies to manage your registration, which could result in your details being replaced with theirs in ASIC Connect.

How to Spot a Genuine ASIC Renewal Notice

Business name registrations are managed by ASIC. Unless you’ve authorised a third party (like your accountant) to handle renewals, your notice will come directly from ASIC.

Here are three quick checks:

  1. Timing – ASIC emails your renewal notice 30 days before expiry. They never send letters.

  2. Email & Website – Official notices will end in .gov.au. Anything else is not from ASIC.

  3. Verify Online – Use the https://asic.gov.au to confirm your renewal date. If the notice arrives outside the usual 30-day window, it’s likely not genuine.

Tip: Add your renewal date to your calendar to stay ahead.

What If You Paid a Third Party by Mistake?

Unfortunately, refunds are unlikely. Contact ASIC immediately to explain the situation and request that your business name be reassigned to your ASIC key.

If you’re unsure about a renewal notice, reach out for advice before paying. Protect your business name and your wallet!

And just like that, you are up to date with the Dream-Team! As always, we welcome your feedback and would love to hear your thoughts!
