A Word from Our Founder

The countdown to EOFY is officially on and with just 42 days to go, now is the perfect time to make sure you’re prepared. This month’s newsletter is jam‑packed with practical resources to help you keep your finger on the pulse as we head into tax season.

Recently, we had the pleasure of attending the Small Business Champions Awards, followed by the Business 2580 Local Star Awards. Events like these are a powerful reminder of just how fortunate we are to be part of such a supportive, hardworking and inspiring business community. Congratulations to all the winners who were recognised it’s so well deserved. We’re proud to stand alongside so many outstanding businesses and individuals.

To everyone who has backed Dream Admin Services along the way thank you. Your trust means more to us than you may realise. And to our incredible team, thank you for bringing excellence, passion and heart to your work every single day.

Warmly,
Tennille Skelly

Payday Super Checklist

The 1 July 2026 deadline for payday super is fast approaching, and we cannot overstate how important it is to have this set up now and running without errors.

From 1 July, super will need to be calculated and paid every pay run, not quarterly. Any issues with payroll configuration, employee fund details, or cashflow will be felt immediately.

To help you stay compliant and avoid unnecessary stress, here are ten key steps every business should be completing now:

  1. Download any required records from the ATO Small Business Clearing House, which will permanently close from 1 July 2026.

  2. Review and confirm employee super fund details.

  3. Update payroll configuration so SG is calculated on ordinary time earnings (OTE), with additional obligations handled separately.

  4. Ensure cashflow planning is in place so funds are available each pay run.

  5. Complete and confirm a successful test pay run.

  6. Set superannuation to calculate every pay run.

  7. Establish a clear approval process for payroll and super payments, including backup approvers.

  8. Set your go‑live date prior to 1 July 2026.

  9. Use an integrated clearing house linked to payroll where possible.

  10. Maintain records showing when super contributions are received by the fund.

If payday super isn’t fully implemented and tested before July, the risk of errors, penalties, and cashflow pressure increases significantly.

Software Highlight: Microsoft Teams

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Microsoft Teams – a platform that continues to be at the heart of how we collaborate, communicate, and support our clients at Dream Admin Services.

Why Teams?

Microsoft Teams makes it easy to plan meetings in advance and invite anyone using just an email address or phone number.

You can share a simple meeting link, allowing participants to join from anywhere – whether they’re on the desktop app, a web browser, or a mobile device. Best of all, clients can join as a guest without needing a Teams account, or sign in for an enhanced experience.

This flexibility means we can support our clients on a platform that’s accessible, familiar, and reliable, without any compromise to meeting quality. Clear video, strong audio, screen sharing, and chat features ensure our sessions remain productive and professional every time.

How we use it daily

Internally, Teams is essential to how we stay connected as a team. We use group chats daily to quickly and easily share:

  • Team movements and availability

  • Updates on client work

  • Important reminders and quick questions

This keeps everyone aligned, reduces email overload, and helps us respond faster both to each other and to our clients.

Microsoft Teams helps us work smarter, stay connected, and deliver seamless support.

ATO Hitlist for 2026

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is sharpening its compliance focus heading into 2026, with increased scrutiny across payroll, income reporting, GST and property transactions. For business owners, now is the time to make sure your numbers are accurate, up to date, and audit‑ready.

Getting ahead of compliance issues early is far easier and far less costly than fixing problems after the ATO comes knocking.

While compliance doesn’t need to be stressful, it does require attention.

Payroll Changes: Payday = Super Day

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is sharpening its compliance focus heading into 2026, with increased scrutiny across payroll, income reporting, GST, and property transactions. For business owners, now is the time to make sure your numbers are accurate, up to date, and audit‑ready.

Getting ahead of compliance issues early is far easier—and far less costly—than fixing problems after the ATO comes knocking. While compliance doesn’t need to be stressful, it does require attention.

Subcontractors Who Look Like Employees

If a subcontractor works like an employee, they are likely considered an employee under the Superannuation Guarantee (SGA) Act. That means superannuation may be owed not just going forward, but potentially for the entire period they have been treated like an employee. This is a major focus area for the ATO and one that can result in significant back payments if misclassified.

Lifestyle vs Income: Cash Purchases Under Review

The ATO is increasingly cross‑matching data, including insurance and asset records, against reported income. Large cash purchases such as cars, boats, or other high‑value items may raise red flags if they don’t align with declared earnings.

The same applies to accumulating assets funded by cash jobs, side hustles, or hobbies. Undeclared income is firmly in the ATO’s sights, and discrepancies between spending and reported income are more likely to trigger enquiries.

Property Sales: Revenue vs Capital

Property transactions remain a key focus, particularly where sales are incorrectly treated as capital rather than revenue. Getting this wrong can mean:

  • Income tax instead of CGT

  • Loss of CGT concessions

  • Significant penalties and interest

Correct classification is critical and often more complex than it appears.

GST Errors on Voucher Transactions

The ATO is also paying closer attention to GST treatment of vouchers, especially where GST depends on whether a voucher is for a specific supply or not. Errors can lead to over‑ or under‑reported GST, adjustments, and penalties often discovered well after the transaction has occurred.

Client Spotlight: House of Smoke and Fire

If you like your business stories served with humour, honesty, and the occasional wildly accurate analogy, you’ll love this one. Meet Adam, the owner of House of Smoke and Fire, who proudly describes himself as being in the solution business helping people feel warmer, fuller, and generally happier than when they walked in.

A second‑generation retailer who chose independence over the corporate path, Adam brings heart, grit, and a whole lot of personality to running a small business. He’s passionate about customer connection, honest about the rollercoaster of retail, and refreshingly unfiltered in how he tells it. This client spotlight is packed with real talk, plenty of laughs, and a reminder of why doing business your own way can be both chaotic and incredibly rewarding.

What inspired you to start your business?

Being a second-generation retailer, I was born into this. My decision to leave BBQs Galore and go independent was spawned by a general dislike in the direction the company was going but also an overwhelming desire have total independence and control. I have never looked back.

What’s your Favorite part of running your business?

I regularly say, I’m in the solution business, my clients come to me hungry or cold and I either give them a way to feed themselves or make them warm, sometimes both. I love selling but really love making people more comfortable than they were. Customer interaction is my favourite.

What’s your biggest challenge as a business owner?

Small business is the equivalent of having a bipolar cousin permanently living with you… One moment he’s helping with the cooking and doing his own laundry, the next moment he has set your couch on fire and sold your lawnmower to a mate to buy weed. The constant ebb and flow of retail always keeps you guessing. Managing the bad days and reminding yourself of the good days is the biggest challenge by far.

What keeps you motivated during tough times?

I regularly need to remind myself that I own my own business! I answer to no one, I can’t be fired, I don’t have to apply for leave! This keeps me motivated; I never want to go back to working for someone else… this keeps me sharp. I am my biggest fan; I am proud of who I am and what I have become.

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you or your business?

  1. When we first had HOSAF shirts made people thought we were parading around in misspelled shirts trying to insinuate we were HOT AF.

  2. I once volunteered myself to work in a winery for free during vintage because I wanted to know more about how wine was made.

  3. I have volunteered many times at the Australian Institute of Sport as a guinea pig for testing of recovery protocol.

How does Dream Admin Services help your business?

The Dream team is part of our family at HOSAF. We get a dedicated team member onsite once a week and adhoc support as needed. Before Dream I prioritised sales and customers over the back end of my business – which would get neglected during busy times. Now I always know what’s happening. I highly recommend the Dream Team.
